Last week was really hot in Toronto, above 30 Celsius, I didn’t put out the bird seed because I didn’t have enough time to set up and clean that bird bath. Honestly, my week is schedule is just all over the place, and I just watched a video on YouTube about effective time management like a day ago.
I had to take a break from my Chemistry labs, the last experiment I had attended was an analysis of quinine as an anti-malarial drug. Historically, this substance was used to treat malarial infection symptoms, quinine was extracted from the bark of a specific type of tree.
In the lab, it was determined that the concentrations of quinine found in modern tonic water, is not sufficient as an anti-malarial drug. I am approaching the end of my degree, and I think I want to go to graduate school, there aren’t really any attractive offers that are on the table, I mean I have a whole year to think of this. However I am going to be 40. I really want to work, I can return to research later.

Other than the weather, let’s break down what happened this week.
So I missed the Chemistry lab experiment where they tested the nucleotides in milk. I was just fed up with how the lab was operating, and I am taking two heavy lab courses (the biology lab is actually fairly relaxed, thankfully because these chemists run on a very different scheldule). I actually don’t really know what the experiment really is, I just show up, do the work, get the data and leave.
As it turns out, I care more about the human body and microorganisms, but I got my independent research project proposal back for the Ecology lab and I recieved a whopping 4.0. I don’t even care about ecology as much, it’s just a lot easier to me.
Probably because I can take a back, and a more managerial type of opproach. Also I have a really supportive team, they work really well with me. In the past I have had people who didn’t work with me at all, and I was new, they just did the work for me and I didn’t really learn anything.
This week I watched two Movies, Saturday Night I streamed on Netflix and the other, Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass I saw in Cinema. I actually loved the movie on Netflix and could have done without the movie I saw in Cinema, I think this was because Saturday Night had Rachel Sennot, whom I adore since I saw her in the movie Shiva Baby.
There were many reasons that Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass wasn’t a good movie, but what really broke it for me, was the constant use of comedic syle “gag” jokes and slapstick comedy. It was really overdone, What I did like was the banal observational humour, although it needs a little bit more work (the 7-11 reference didn’t really hit as well as the others), however some of these references may be an American cultural reference that I am just not familiar with.
Saturday night was about the launch of the first episode of SNL, and I can honestly say that this movie felt like home to me. I don’t even know how I would explain this, it just felt so, familiar to me, so like anyone wanted the answers without spending the time in therapy or talking to someone in the mental health feild that has real life experience with humans and their emotions outside of a rule based large language model, I turned to AI.
Gemini said that because of the specific resemblence to my life, and how it specifically resembles chapters of my life that has already passed, that I would feel a strong emotional connection (I would be lying if I told you that I knew this and wasn’t hoping for a more serendepitous outcome). The live adrenaline pump of solving problems as they arise to produce their first episode resonates with my music performance past, the thrill that I experience when I was a Box Office Manager for Canadian Music Week and Indie Week (both live music festivals), as well as my volunteering efforts for The Toronto International Beaches Jazz Festival, TIFF and other festivals.
The skills that the sciences offer me is more methodological, precise and involves a structured skill set that I currently don’t possess (but I am vigorously working on). I constantly remind myself that in order for me to be successful, I should approach my sciences as how I used to approach my music. By Practising all the time, and it sucks that I only get one shot at the lab a week, like in Grey’s Anatomy, they have a skills lab.
So this is probably why I am getting crummy marks, and I am not going to ever get into Med School. BUT get this, I obtained a 4.0 in my Ecology Lab Report. Totally blew me away, I have never recieved a mark that good on anything in science, the worst part is that I don’t even care that much about ecology. I don’t want to work outside, in forested areas with insects and poisonous plants. My proposed research paper is on the invasiveness of dog strangling vine on understory plant diversity. but that is like something I’m not really passionate about.
I hope this isn’t what it means to become an adult. To have to do things that you have almost no interest in. But I mean, I am not opposed to doing Ecology work, I am just getting tired of the relentless lab work,
Looking towards this week (this report was written on the Sunday and then scheduled for a Monday morning release):
I have 1 week left to do my lab experiment for Ecology at the Birkdale Ravine, I also have a report to write and a presentation to create.
In that Ecology and Evolution lab, I will be doing the last data collection on our Algae growth experiment that we started the same time we finished our lab on fruit flies and genetic drift.
In the Analytical Chemistry Lab, we will be doing a potentiometric analysis of cola.
I had an exam in Developmental Psychology, hopefully that went well. I have a few classes left before I close out the Summer semester, and I want to talk about my fall selection and that I am hopfully not fucking my future.

Clesrly it’s not.
